National Suicide Prevention Month

September is suicide prevention awareness month, and I'm here to encourage you, let you know that you do matter, you have a purpose in this world, and life gets better. This month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness.

According to Nami.org, "suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues."

Statistics from Nami.org indicate that "every year thousands of individuals die by suicide, leaving behind their friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of loss. In many cases, friends and families affected by a suicide loss (often called “suicide loss survivors”) are left in the dark. Too often the feelings of shame and stigma prevent them from talking openly."

September is dedicated to advocate and spread awareness about the importance of suicide prevention. Always remember that you matter. You have a purpose in this world, don't ever think that you aren't loved. You have family, friends, and loved ones, who love and care about your well-being. I know right now life may seem hard, and it may seem like your situation isn't going to get better, but it WILL get better for you. Life has it's ups and downs, but hard times won't last forever, and there's always beauty in the struggle.

If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call 911 immediately.
