Mental Health Awareness Month

May is the month of mental health awareness (also referred to as "mental health month), it has been observed in May in the United States since 1949, informing millions of people in the United States through media, local events, and screenings. Even though millennials are more aware of mental illnesses and are more openly speaking about it, people still aren't seeking help from a mental health professional.

According to The National Alliance on Mental Illness, "millions of Americans are affected by mental health conditions every year, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (46.6 million) experience mental illness in a given year, approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S. (11.2 million) experiences a serious mental illness in a given year that substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities. Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13%".

If you're dealing with a mental illness, please speak up, and get the help you want. If your loved one has a mental illness, then please encourage them to see a therapist. You aren't alone, many people have mental health conditions. This doesn't make you "crazy" or "abnormal", those are just negative connotations associated with mental illnesses.

As a society, it's important that we become more aware of mental health issues and inform our generation with the importance of mental health. Make your mental health a priority, your health is wealth. Let's end the mental health stigma and become more comfortable having conversations concerning mental health.
